Wetherby

Scarborough RUFC returned to winning ways in emphatic style as they beat Wetherby 33-7 at a cold Silver Royd on Saturday afternoon.
After hours of hard work from the grounds team to get the game on, Ben Foden’s side made a commanding start to the game and took the lead in the 3rd minute. Charlie Yates’ clearance kick was collected by Kahu Craig Te-Ranga and the Fullback worked wide before offloading for Joe Davies to work his way inside and score. Ollie Carroll added the extras for 7-0. Both sides then exchanged chances, with Scarborough going close to scoring in the 23rd minute only for a penalty to halt their progress inches from the Wetherby line. Foden’s side put this missed opportunity behind them and doubled their advantage in the 28th minute through Scrum-Half Jordan Wakeham. When the ball popped up kindly into his arms, he jinked past a player and scored to the right of the posts. Carroll added the extras to extend his sides lead to 14-0. The visitors then enjoyed a prolonged period of pressure inside the Scarborough half and went close to reducing the deficit only for Yates’ penalty to drift wide of the posts. They didn’t have to wait long before they were threatening the Scarborough defence again and in the 38th minute they broke through to score to the left of the posts. Yates added the extras to leave his side trailing 14-7 at the break.
The second half started in emphatic style for Scarborough as they were awarded a penalty try in the 43rd minute. With Euan Govier looking set to score, the Wetherby man illegally pushed the ball into touch. The referee awarded a penalty try before showing the Wetherby man a yellow card. The lead was then extended to 26-7 in the 64th minute when skipper Sam Dawson peeled off the maul and broke clear down the blind side to score near the corner. The afternoon was rounded off with a try from Jake Lyon. He collected the ball and bundled his way through the tackles to score. Carroll added the extras to round off a 33-7 victory.
Scarborough travel to struggling Doncaster Phoenix next weekend as they look to build some momentum before the Christmas break.
