Scarborough RUFC continued their quest for promotion to Regional One North East after they put in an impressive performance to beat Morley 36-14 at Scatcherd Lane.
Dealt a blow before kick-off with a number of key players having to drop out due to injury, Ben Foden’s side made a strong start to the game and took the lead in the 5th minute when Harry Domett reached to score out wide. The lead soon became 10-0 when Kahu Craig Te-Ranga found Joe Davies on the wing and he had too much momentum as he scored in the corner. The home side, who were on a run of six games unbeaten, responded well and completely shifted momentum with tries in the 29th and 36th minute. First they scored in the corner, courtesy of an overlap, through Will Kinder before Theo Tyrer raced through onto a grubber kick to give his side a slender 14-10 lead. The final action of a tense first-half came in the form of a try for Tom Harrison. The fullback was threaded through a gap by Craig Te-Ranga and he reached for the line to score. Carroll added the extras as his side retook the lead on the stroke of half-time.
The second-half started with the Maroons on the front foot and they went close to scoring, but they found no way through the resolute Scarborough defence. The visitors then turned defence into attack and stretched their advantage to 22-14 when Jake Lyon scored from close range. The travelling supporters were celebrating again just minutes later when tries from James Long and Tom Harrison helped put clear daylight between themselves and Morley. Tiernan Ingham was shown a yellow card in the 76th minute for a high tackle before he watched his side put in another spirited defensive shift to frustrate the home side as the game headed towards it’s conclusion.
Scarborough travel to second place Pocklington next weekend, knowing that a win would extend their advantage at the top of the table.
