Scarborough RUFC took a big step towards being crowned as Regional Two North East champions after they beat Wetherby 29-27 at Grange Park on Saturday afternoon.
Ben Foden’s side made a fast start and took an early lead as Jonty Holloway raced onto a Joe Davies grubber kick to score in the corner. It wasn’t long before Holloway had his second try as Kahu Craig Te-Ranga beat his defender before offloading for the winger to score and extend his side’s lead to 12-0. The home side then enjoyed a period of sustained pressure and reduced the deficit to 12-8 after they scored an unconverted try and a penalty. Scarborough responded well and re-established a comfortable lead when Aaron Wilson and Euan Govier scored unconverted tries to give their side a 22-8 lead at the break.
The second-half started with Wetherby on the front foot and when they scored back-to-back tries in the 44th and 46th minute, to make it 22-20, the game turned into a scrappy affair. Jonty Holloway then completed an impressive hat-trick in the 52nd minute to ease the nerves of the travelling Scarborough supporters. Cameron Briggs was shown a yellow card in the 59th minute following a nasty high tackle but Foden’s side were unable to capitalise on the man advantage. With the game heading towards its conclusion, Rob Adair cut through the Scarborough defence and crashed over to leave his side trailing by just two points. Luckily for the title chasing visitors, they were able to secure possession and kick the ball out after a scrum.
Scarborough know that a win against Doncaster Phoenix, in two weeks’ time, will crown them champions of Regional Two North East.
