Old Brodleians
By Charlie Hopper
Scarborough RUFC put in arguably their best performance of the season as they beat Old Brodleians 27-5 at Silver Royd on Saturday despite having to play the majority of the match with 14 men.
With promotion in their sights, Ben Foden’s side made a dominant start but found it difficult to break through a resolute Old Brodleians defence. In the 14th minute, the home side were reduced to 14 men as Harry Domett was shown a red card following a fight between both sets of players. Brods used the man advantage and scored just four minutse later as their scrum picked up momentum and crossed over for a 5-0 lead. Their narrow advantage only lasted 10 minutes however, as Scarborough responded in emphatic fashion. First Jordan Wakeham scored under the posts after taking a penalty quickly before Euan Govier finished a smart move to give his side a 14-5 lead at the break.
The second half started with Scarborough on the front foot, and they extended their advantage further in the 44th minute through Joe Davies. The inform winger proved too strong for the Brods defence, crossing over to the right of the posts. The referee then had his hands in his pocket after Curtis Taylor had prevented an almost certain try and was shown a yellow card. From the resulting penalty, Davies went over for his second try of the game to give his side a comfortable 24-5 lead. Foden began to empty his bench, with next weekend’s trip to Wetherby in the back of his mind, and his side continued to defend well. On the stroke of full-time, Ollie Carroll kicked a straightforward penalty to extend the lead to 27-5 and that proved to be the final action of the game.
Heading into the final four games of the season, Scarborough could win the league next weekend at Grange Park if Pocklington fail to beat Pontefract.
