Malton & Norton
By Andy Standing
Scarborough RUFC raced to a 41 – 26 win in their derby clash against Malton and Norton at Silver Royd to move back to the top of the North One East table.
Simon Smith’s Scarborough side flew to an early 8 – 0 lead via a Matty Young try and Tome Ratcliffe penalty. With 10 minutes on the clock Malton hit back with a try of their own through number 7 Matt Bowman to narrow their deficit to 8 – 5, but Scarborough were soon back in command with Aaron Wilson crashing over and Ratcliffe converting for a 15 – 5 advantage.
Superb work from Tom Hicks , who broke from deep in and almost the full length of the field but gave a last pass to Jonty Holloway who finished the run to extend the lead. It was Wilson who shortly after got his second try for the evening to give Scarborough a commanding lead of 27 – 5.
Malton had the last say of the first half, skipper Sam Triffitt driving his troops forward to be finished off by bowman to collect his second and leave the score 27 – 12 at the break.
A superb solo effort from James Perrett soon made it 34 – 12 after the break but Malton again rallied and two tries from Rob Featherstone, both converted, narrowed the Scarborough lead to 34 – 26.
Any nerves were soon settled after Featherstone was sent to the bin and then Joe Marshall touched down with a superb diving effort, which was converted by Ratcliffe to wrap up an impressive 41 – 26 win.
Scarborough’s win saw them leap back to the top spot of north one east standings ahead of Huddersfield YMCA, who lost 14 – 12 to Morley.
Smith’s side finish what has been a superb 2018 with another huge derby clash, with East Coast rivals Bridlington visiting Silver Royd this Saturday, 2.15pm Kick Off.
