Heath

By Charlie Hopper

Scarborough RUFC slipped to their first defeat of the season, after a late try saw Heath walk away from Silver Royd with a 25-18 victory.

The visitors, who beat Pocklington last weekend, were the first to get a score on the board when Mclauchlin powered through the Scarborough defence to score in the corner. Matty Jones’ side then enjoyed a long period of attacking possession, and reduced the deficit, courtesy of Tom Ratcliffe’s boot. With the score at 5-3, it looked as if the Silver Royd outfit had the momentum but a yellow card for Aaron Wilson, in the 29th minute, halted the progess. On the half-hour mark, the visitors extended their lead to 10-3. Hallett received the ball on the wing and managed to work his way inside and over the line. Jones’ side hit back however through youngster Tom Anderson. Scrum-half Jordan Wakeham drew a defender in and offloaded to the winger who darted in at the corner to leave the score at 10-8.

Heath continued to show their power and stretched their lead just before half-time. Having built the phases, Rhodes managed to power his away through the Scarborough defence. In the 53rd minute, the home side brought the game level. Quick thinking from Wakeham, presented Ratcliffe with the chance to weave his way through the defence and score close to the posts. The Scarborough scrum was then penalised on the edge of the 22m line and the visitors re-established a slender lead at 18-15. With the game inside the final 10 minutes, man of the match Ratcliffe brought his side level once again with an easy penalty kick in front of the posts. It wasn’t to be for Matty Jones’ side who conceded a try in the last minute. The visitors kicked the ball into the corner, piled on the pressure and Spiers crashed over to give his side a 25-18 victory.

Scarborough are on the road again on Saturday, when they face Bradford and Bingley.
