Scarborough - Vikings
By Craig Bone
Vikings needing the win to move away from the chasing cluster of teams behind them in the league.
Started for a change like a bullet out of a gun with a try after 2 minutes from centre Craig Fairbairn who pounced on a sloppy mid field pass from BP converted by Alex Rowley. Vikings, now with the strong wind behind them, turning the screw up front get a push over try from 10 metres out from No.8 Tom Read. Fifteen minutes from the break the young Phil Stewart grabs an interception of nearly 2 yards under the posts converted by Rowley 19-0 in favour of the Vikings. Five minutes before half time BP with their only play of the half score a deserved try to give a 19-7 to the Vikings at half time.
Half time team talk was to keep it tight especially playing against the strong wind, look after the ball well, the wind became a huge factor. Vikings still going well in the tight, started to lose their shape and structure they had in the first half. Try as the team did – not giving up to the end – came away with a 19-33 loss.
Positives: man of match Tom Read never gave up the fight, both Rory Day and Finlay Dennis playing out of position were brilliant especially in defence; the whole team tried to turn the tide of weather elements and BP seeking an unlikely win before halftime to no avail.
The Vikings aim back in September was get in the playoffs in April, but we need to step up a few more gears which we have shown glimpses of at times this season to get results against Beverley in two weeks and Malton the week after are a must.
